こんにちは。ポモナ大学オールデンボーグセンター日本語ランゲージレジデントの杉原かおりです。
私の部屋と日本語ラウンジもオールデンボーグ内にあり、学生に対して日本語の使用と日本文化・社会に対する理解の促進を行っています。主に、日本語会話の授業、日本語コースの教授陣の補佐、日本文化関連活動の運営、そして平日の昼休みに行われる日本語ランゲージテーブルの運営を行っています。仕事以外にも、学生として外国語教授法やアメリカ研究などの科目を履修しています。教員と学生の二足のわらじをはいた生活をしています。
私は、日本の神奈川県出身です。神奈川県は東京に隣接している県で、都市化・産業化がすすんでいる一方で豊かな自然と歴史的な場所にも多く恵まれています。神奈川県は東京にもアクセスしやすいので、東京の西部に位置する津田塾大学に通っていました。津田塾大学とは、日本における初の女子高等教育機関のひとつです。学部課程をアメリカ文化コースを専攻して卒業しました。現在は、アメリカ研究専攻の修士課程2年に在籍しています。専門分野は、第二次世界大戦以降の日米関係史です。私は自分とは違うバックグラウンドをもつ人々や文化・歴史に関心を持っています。自分の視野を広げるためにも、読書、旅行、そして様々な人と交流をすることが好きです。一年間、このポモナ大学でランゲージレジデントとして、たくさんの方とお会いできることを楽しみにしております。

Hi, I’m Kaori Sugihara, the new Japanese Language Resident at Oldenborg, Pomona College. My apartment and Japanese lounge are located in Oldenborg. My main mission as an assistant is to promote use of Japanese and understanding of Japanese culture and society. I teach Japanese conversation class, assist the Japanese language faculty, organize cultural events, and foster conversation at the Oldenborg Dining Hall language table every weekday. Besides work, I take courses; pedagogy and American studies as a student.
I’m from Kanagawa, which is a prefecture located next to Tokyo. Kanagawa is rich in diversity because it has highly advanced areas in terms of urbanized and industrialization, and it blessed with a natural environment and historical places. As Kanagawa has good access to Tokyo, I was able to go to Tsuda College located in the western part of Tokyo from my house. Tsuda College is the one of the first private institution of higher education for women in Japan. I received a B.A. in American studies. Currently, I am a second year master’s student in American studies at graduate school of Tsuda College. My specialization is the history of Japan-U.S. relations since the end of World WarⅡ. I’m interested in foreign countries’ history, culture, and people with different cultural background. To broaden my view, I love reading a book, traveling, and communicating with people. I’m really looking forward to meeting and socializing with many people through working as the Japanese Langugage Resident in Pomona College.
